The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at promoting workers’ welfare, ensuring workplace safety, and strengthening data protection standards across the country.
The collaboration was formalised during an inter-agency meeting held at NSITF headquarters in Abuja, where both institutions agreed to align efforts toward safeguarding the rights and privacy of Nigerian workers in line with existing legislation.
Welcoming the NDPC delegation, NSITF Managing Director, Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation, proposing a framework that benefits both agencies. He highlighted the need for full compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, including the appointment of a data protection officer and staff training in data management.
“We recognise the importance of adhering to the law and establishing a robust system to safeguard the personal data entrusted to us,” Faleye stated.
However, he also urged the NDPC to reciprocate by complying with the Employee Compensation Act 2010 through the enrolment of its workforce in the Employee Compensation Scheme managed by NSITF. “As we strive to comply with your regulatory requirements, we also expect your agency to meet its obligations under our mandate,” he noted.
Barrister Faleye proposed a collaborative training exchange — with NSITF offering workplace health and safety education to NDPC staff, while the Commission supports NSITF in building data protection capacity.
He further suggested that a formal certificate of data compliance from the NDPC could enhance public trust in the Fund’s operations. To that end, he advocated for a joint awareness campaign by both institutions to promote their shared objectives and increase public engagement.
In response, NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji, welcomed the partnership and affirmed the Commission’s readiness to work closely with NSITF. He acknowledged the pivotal roles both agencies play in national development and emphasized their contributions to achieving President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This collaboration aligns with the President’s vision of a safer, more prosperous Nigeria where the rights and dignity of every citizen are protected,” Olatunji said.
The partnership signals a unified approach to improving workplace conditions and digital privacy in Nigeria.
