Leadway Assurance has strengthened its push to safeguard Nigeria’s food security by teaming up with the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU), several state governments, and the PULA Foundation to provide climate-resilient agricultural and insurance solutions to smallholder farmers.
The initiative will cover more than 249,000 farmers across eight states—Borno, Enugu, Taraba, Ekiti, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Jigawa—helping shield them from climate-induced risks such as droughts, floods, and pest infestations.
Under the scheme, participating state governments will subsidize half of farmers’ insurance premiums, while the PULA/Bayer foundations will offset the remaining balance through donor funding. This structure ensures that vulnerable farmers can access affordable protection against losses that threaten their livelihoods and food supply chains.
The collaboration forms part of the PFSCU’s broader mandate under Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda to transform food systems. One flagship initiative, the Harvesting Hope Caravan, will tour four geopolitical zones, driving grassroots awareness, education, and engagement around climate-smart farming practices and innovative risk solutions.
PULA Foundation, active across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, focuses on building resilience for millions of vulnerable people annually by embedding insurance into public-private partnerships.
Speaking on the initiative, Ayoola Fatona, Global Head of Agricultural Risk Solutions at Leadway Assurance, said:
“This partnership is more than selling insurance; it is about building a climate-smart agricultural landscape that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable. Together, we are helping farmers secure their livelihoods, encouraging innovation, and safeguarding Nigeria’s food systems for the future.”
Leadway Assurance Managing Director, Gboyega Lesi, added:
“Our role goes beyond risk transfer—we are equipping farmers with knowledge, advisory services, and practical solutions that make them more resilient. This is a clear example of how public-private collaboration can protect livelihoods and strengthen long-term food security.”
The Harvesting Hope initiative highlights the growing importance of insurance and advisory services as catalysts for agricultural transformation. By integrating climate-conscious strategies with grassroots support, Leadway and its partners aim to not only protect farmers but also drive inclusive economic growth across rural communities.
With more than 50 years in Nigeria’s insurance sector, Leadway Assurance continues to expand its footprint in agricultural risk solutions as part of its commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
