The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Akutah Pius, has called for increased staff sensitisation on the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) scheme to ensure employees fully understand and benefit from its offerings.
Dr. Akutah made the appeal during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the NSITF to the Council’s headquarters in Lagos. Represented by the Director of Human Resources Management, Alhaji Mustapha Zubairu, he reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to improving staff welfare, particularly in areas of health, safety, and insurance coverage.
He noted that the NSC already implements several employee-focused insurance policies that have positively impacted staff wellbeing but urged the NSITF to further strengthen its legal and operational frameworks to enhance the value provided to participating organizations.
“We must deepen awareness among staff about the benefits of the NSITF scheme so that every employee can fully take advantage of it,” he said.
NSITF Reaffirms Commitment to Workers’ Protection
The Head of the NSITF delegation, Mr. Adegbite Oludotun, explained that the Fund’s mandate includes providing compensation for government employees in cases of injury, disability, or death sustained during active service. He assured that the agency remains committed to improving its operations and ensuring prompt response to claims.
Council Strengthens Leadership Continuity
In a related development, the NSC has reiterated its commitment to institutional growth and leadership sustainability through a Succession Planning Programme held recently in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Akutah—represented by the Director of Strategic Planning and Research, Mr. Rotimi Anifowose—described succession planning as crucial to maintaining the Council’s resilience and effectiveness as Nigeria’s port economic regulator.
“Building leadership capacity is key to preserving institutional memory and preparing the Council for future challenges,” he said. “This initiative ensures continuity, efficiency, and a dynamic leadership culture within the organisation.”
He urged participants to take the training seriously and use the opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills for the benefit of the Council and the maritime industry at large.
