Petrol station attendants under the platform of the Concerned Petrol Station Workers (C-PSWs) have commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for launching a comprehensive health insurance scheme for service attendants nationwide. The workers, however, renewed calls for the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to conduct long-delayed elections for their category.
The Attendants’ Health Insurance Scheme—introduced on November 13, 2025, by NNPC Retail Ltd in collaboration with NNPC HMO—aims to provide access to quality healthcare for more than 7,000 petrol station attendants across the country.
In a statement issued in Kaduna on Tuesday, the group’s convener, Comrade Ibrahim Zango, described the initiative as a major step toward improving welfare standards in the downstream petroleum sector.
“We are particularly delighted with the launch of the Health Insurance Scheme… which will provide thousands of NNPCL workers with much-needed access to quality healthcare,” Zango said. He added that the programme “is a clear demonstration of NNPCL’s commitment to the well-being of its workforce and sets a remarkable standard in the petroleum downstream sector.”
However, the workers stressed that unresolved labour issues remain and urged NUPENG’s national leadership to immediately convene elections for Petrol Station Workers to ensure proper representation.
“While we celebrate this milestone, we also seize this moment to reiterate our call on the national leadership of NUPENG to urgently conduct elections,” Zango said, citing lingering concerns around safety, fair remuneration, job security, improved working conditions and the need for legitimate leadership within the union.
The group additionally called on private petroleum marketers to replicate NNPCL’s gesture by extending health insurance coverage to their own employees, arguing that better welfare translates to greater productivity and improved service delivery.
