Nigeria is set to host the maiden zonal meeting of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, marking a significant step toward strengthening cross-border insurance operations in West Africa.
The four-day event, organised by the National Bureau of the scheme, will take place from April 13 to 16, 2026, at Eko Hotel & Suites, bringing together regulators, insurers, and key stakeholders from across the ECOWAS region.
According to Executive Secretary Raphael Abiiba, the meeting will focus on improving cross-border claims settlement, operational standardisation, and institutional collaboration within the scheme.
Under the theme “The Digital Divide: Managing Change in the Brown Card Operational Strategy for Effective Cross-Border Claims Settlement,” discussions will address the need for digital integration, enhanced transparency, and real-time processing across member states.
The ECOWAS Brown Card Scheme provides third-party motor insurance coverage for motorists travelling across West African countries, ensuring prompt compensation for accident victims and eliminating the need for additional insurance at borders.
In Nigeria, the scheme is embedded in motor insurance policies at no extra cost, offering seamless protection for drivers across the sub-region.
Officials say the Lagos meeting aims to strengthen regional cooperation, improve efficiency, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the scheme as cross-border mobility continues to grow.
