The Lagos State Government has approved the full implementation of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS), in a major push to strengthen worker protection and workplace safety.
The initiative will be executed in partnership with the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), which has pledged technical and institutional support for a seamless rollout across the state.
Managing Director of NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye, said the collaboration is designed to establish a structured framework for effective implementation, including onboarding, advisory services, sensitisation, and claims management.
The scheme provides compensation for employees in cases of workplace injury, disease, disability, or death, while also strengthening employer accountability and occupational safety standards.
Faleye emphasised the need for swift coordination, including the designation of a lead agency and technical focal point, alongside the integration of compliance requirements into public procurement and contractor engagement processes.
Lagos Head of Service, Bode Agoro, confirmed the state’s commitment, announcing immediate implementation and the creation of a dedicated unit to oversee operations.
The move positions Lagos as a leader in workforce protection, with the ECS expected to enhance labour standards, boost institutional credibility, and support long-term economic sustainability.
