In a major move reinforcing confidence in public sector insurance, the Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of N799.84 million to 148 beneficiaries of deceased public servants.
The payment, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represents the first tranche of insurance benefits for 2026, targeting families of employees from the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and local government councils.
A Lifeline for Families Left Behind
The beneficiaries—comprising relatives of workers who died in active service—received the funds under an insurance scheme designed to provide financial relief during times of loss.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Special Adviser on Rural Development, Nurudeen Agbaje, said the disbursement highlights the administration’s ongoing commitment to worker welfare, even beyond death.
He noted that since 2017, the state has paid over N5 billion in insurance benefits, helping families cope with the economic realities that often follow the loss of a breadwinner.
Strengthening Trust in Government Insurance Schemes
Agbaje emphasized that the consistent payment of benefits demonstrates the government’s dedication to fulfilling its obligations to public servants and their dependants.
He also urged beneficiaries to utilize the funds wisely—particularly in supporting children’s education, welfare, and long-term family stability.
Call for Transparency and Efficiency
To ensure seamless processing of future claims, officials called on insurance desk officers to maintain diligence and professionalism when verifying documentation such as death certificates.
This, they said, would help guarantee prompt and accurate disbursement of benefits to deserving families.
Stakeholders Applaud Initiative
Key stakeholders at the event, including representatives from LASACO Assurance Plc and Haggai Insurance Brokers Limited, commended the government’s consistency in honoring insurance obligations.
They encouraged beneficiaries to invest the funds prudently in ways that preserve the legacies of the deceased while securing the future of their families.
Beneficiaries Express Gratitude
Speaking on behalf of recipients, Promise Nnamadi expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for the gesture, describing it as a meaningful way of honoring the contributions of deceased workers.
He assured that beneficiaries would make responsible use of the funds to support their households and sustain their loved ones’ legacies.
Why This Matters for Nigeria’s Insurance Sector
The continued disbursement of insurance benefits by Lagos State signals growing institutional trust in structured insurance schemes within Nigeria’s public sector.
It also highlights the critical role of insurance in:
- Providing financial security to families
