Crown Takaful Insurance Limited has secured regulatory approval to distribute N100.9 million in surplus to its participants, in a move that highlights the growing role of Takaful in Nigeria’s insurance market.
The surplus distribution, approved by the company’s board following clearance from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), relates to the 2024 financial year and comes within the insurer’s first year of operations.
The development underscores a fundamental feature of the Takaful model, under which participants contribute to a common pool to provide mutual protection against defined risks. After claims, re-Takaful costs and required reserves have been accounted for, any eligible surplus may be distributed to participants in accordance with the approved operating framework.
For Crown Takaful, the N100.9 million payout represents a tangible benefit to participants and an early demonstration of the mutual-risk-sharing principles underpinning its business model.
Commenting on the approval, Crown Takaful Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nasir Abubakar Song, said the distribution reflected the company’s commitment to fairness, transparency and mutual benefit.
Song described the regulatory approval as more than a compliance milestone, saying it represented the fulfilment of the trust placed in the company by its participants.
He said achieving the surplus distribution within the insurer’s first year of operations demonstrated the commitment of its employees and the confidence of its participants, while reaffirming the company’s ambition to establish Takaful as a credible alternative within Nigeria’s insurance landscape.
“Receiving regulatory approval to distribute surplus is our most direct and tangible way of honouring that trust,” Song said, adding that Crown Takaful was proud to be among the companies advancing the Takaful model in Nigeria.
Crown Takaful was licensed by NAICOM in 2024 and said it generated approximately N1.935 billion in gross contributions during its first year of operation.
The insurer said the surplus distribution reinforces one of the key distinctions of Takaful, in which participants can benefit from favourable financial performance of the collective risk pool in addition to receiving insurance protection.
Unlike conventional insurance arrangements, where premiums are generally paid in exchange for contractual risk transfer, Takaful is structured around mutual assistance and shared responsibility among participants. Contributions are pooled and managed according to the principles governing the Takaful arrangement, with eligible surplus potentially returned to participants after the relevant obligations have been met.
The latest payout could also strengthen efforts to deepen awareness and adoption of Takaful products in Nigeria, particularly among consumers and businesses seeking insurance solutions aligned with ethical and mutual-risk-sharing principles.
Crown Takaful said it would continue to expand access to Takaful products for individuals, families and businesses, with a focus on transparent and inclusive financial protection.
The company’s first-year contribution performance, combined with the approved surplus distribution, provides an early indication of its growth ambitions as Nigeria’s insurance sector continues to seek wider participation and greater penetration.
