The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it will commence the controlled demolition of the distressed Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island on Thursday, following assessments that found the building to be a threat to public safety.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, announced the planned operation in a public safety advisory issued on Wednesday to residents, traders, motorists and other members of the public.
He said the demolition was approved after structural assessments by relevant agencies confirmed that the building posed a significant risk to lives and property.
According to the advisory, the exercise will be conducted professionally and in line with global best practices to minimise risks and prevent incidents.
The agency said the immediate surroundings of the building would be cordoned off, with public access restricted throughout the demolition process.
Temporary traffic diversions will also be introduced on adjoining streets to protect road users and maintain traffic flow, LASEMA said.
Oke-Osanyintolu warned that the operation could generate noise and dust, appealing to residents, traders and businesses in the area to bear with the authorities during the exercise.
He advised motorists and other road users to avoid the affected area where possible, use alternative routes and comply with instructions from emergency responders and traffic management officials.
The LASEMA chief added that the agency would work with other relevant state agencies to coordinate safety measures and ensure the operation proceeds smoothly.
He urged residents, traders and motorists to cooperate with officials throughout the demolition exercise.
