Chowdeck has taken a major step toward strengthening rider welfare by partnering with MyCoverGenius to provide personal accident insurance for more than 20,000 delivery riders across Nigeria.
The partnership, which began in November 2024, automatically enrols every active Chowdeck rider into an accident insurance plan — offering protection that many gig workers in Africa typically lack.
What the Insurance Covers
Under the agreement, riders are covered for:
- Accidental medical expenses
- Temporary disability
- Other key accident-related protections
The coverage creates a financial safety net for riders who serve more than two million customers nationwide, ensuring they are not left vulnerable in the event of workplace injuries.
Raising the Bar in Nigeria’s Gig Economy
Since launching in October 2021, Chowdeck has built a strong reputation for speed, reliability, and rapid expansion. But this move signals something more: a deliberate shift toward structured worker protection in Nigeria’s fast-growing gig economy.
“Riders are a critical part of everything we do at Chowdeck,” said Umar Nasir, the company’s Head of Operations.
“This partnership with MyCoverGenius is about more than just insurance; it’s about setting a new benchmark for how delivery platforms in Africa should protect and support their people.”
For a sector often criticised for offering flexibility without security, this initiative positions Chowdeck as a leader in responsible platform management.
Making Insurance Accessible to Everyday Workers
Adebowale Banjo, CEO of MyCoverGenius, described the collaboration as a practical demonstration of how digital platforms can embed financial protection directly into their ecosystems.
“Our mission has always been to make insurance accessible, relevant, and impactful for everyday Africans,” he said. “By partnering with Chowdeck, we are extending protection to thousands of hard-working riders and demonstrating how digital platforms can integrate insurance in ways that directly improve lives.”
Why This Matters Now
Nigeria’s gig economy is expanding rapidly. A recent survey revealed that 64% of location-based gig workers say their income from digital platforms significantly supports their household finances.
As demand for on-demand delivery services continues to rise, the Chowdeck–MyCoverGenius partnership could signal a turning point — showing that growth and worker protection do not have to be mutually exclusive.
A New Standard for Africa’s Digital Platforms?
With over 20,000 riders now insured, the move sets a powerful example for other tech-enabled logistics and delivery companies operating across the continent.
In an industry built on speed and convenience, Chowdeck’s latest step sends a clear message:
Protecting the people behind the deliveries is just as important as delivering on time.
