Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has presented cheques worth ₦2.17 billion to 1,574 next-of-kin and beneficiaries of deceased police officers.
The disbursement took place on Wednesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, with senior police officers, insurance stakeholders, and recipients in attendance.
The funds were released under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, covering entitlements from 2015 to 2025. According to Egbetokun, the payments also cleared several outstanding claims that had been delayed for nearly a decade.
This marks the 11th such exercise since his assumption of office. The IGP noted that, so far, more than ₦24.2 billion has been paid to 9,735 families of fallen officers under his leadership.
Egbetokun described the gesture as both a duty of responsibility and an act of remembrance, stressing that the Force is restructuring its welfare system to be more robust, transparent, and fully digitised to ensure timely payments in the future.
He commended the Force Insurance Unit for its diligence, the insurance companies for meeting their obligations, and the Ministry of Police Affairs for its guidance. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for what he called “unwavering support” towards police welfare initiatives.
