Inmates in custodial facilities across Kano State will now have access to comprehensive healthcare services following the state government’s approval of their enrolment into the Kano State Healthcare Contributory Scheme.
The initiative was announced during a visit by Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KACHMA), to the Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service. The visit highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of inmates through improved access to healthcare.
“The state government is fully prepared to ensure that all inmates in our facilities receive quality healthcare while in custody,” Dr. Muktar stated. “This enrolment will guarantee access to basic and comprehensive healthcare services, contributing to their overall well-being and reformation.”
A statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Nasarawa, affirmed the significance of the initiative. The Controller of Corrections for Kano State, Ado Inuwa, lauded the move, describing it as a milestone in improving the living conditions of inmates.
“This gesture will not only enhance the health of inmates but also motivate them to become productive and law-abiding citizens upon their release,” said Inuwa. “Healthcare is essential for effective custodial management, and this move will greatly aid in the reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.”
The healthcare coverage will include routine medical check-ups, emergency treatments, and other essential health services. The policy underscores the state government’s focus on social welfare and justice, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between correctional facilities and government agencies.
The initiative is expected to set a precedent for integrating healthcare services into correctional management, ensuring that the rights and well-being of inmates remain a priority.
