MISR NonLife Insurance, one of Egypt’s leading insurers, has expressed strong interest in expanding into Nigeria, citing growing opportunities created by regulatory reforms and the country’s evolving economic landscape.
The indication came during a courtesy visit by the company’s delegation, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Maharaj, to the Commissioner for Insurance, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at the headquarters of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).
Targeting Non-Life, Reinsurance Segments
During the meeting, MISR NonLife signalled readiness to explore opportunities within Nigeria’s non-life and reinsurance segments, describing the country as one of Africa’s most promising frontiers for insurance growth.
Maharaj pointed to the recently enacted Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act and the broader transformation agenda within the sector as key attractions for international operators seeking expansion in emerging markets.
He disclosed that the delegation would engage key industry stakeholders in Lagos to evaluate potential market entry routes, partnerships and collaborative ventures.
The delegation included Ahmed Alkanhawy, Assistant CEO of MISR NonLife Insurance, and Hossein Shaky of the Egyptian Embassy in Nigeria.
NAICOM Signals Openness to Foreign Investment
In response, NAICOM outlined its statutory mandate and recent reform initiatives aimed at strengthening market stability, enhancing consumer protection and deepening insurance penetration across the country.
The Commission reiterated its openness to credible foreign investors, noting that strategic international participation could enhance underwriting capacity, deepen reinsurance capabilities and introduce advanced technical expertise into the Nigerian market.
Industry observers say MISR’s interest underscores renewed global confidence in Nigeria’s insurance sector, particularly as reforms seek to modernise regulatory frameworks, improve compliance and bolster market discipline.
Collaboration on Business Environment Reforms
In a related development, NAICOM also hosted a delegation from the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration under the Business Environment Enhancement Programme Accelerator (BEEPA).
The PEBEC team, led by Aimeya Okpebholo, met with NAICOM management to review progress under the 90-day BEEPA initiative, which runs from January 26 to April 26.
The engagement forms part of broader government efforts to improve Nigeria’s ease-of-doing-business environment and support reforms across key sectors, including insurance.
