In a landmark move to enhance welfare and job security in Nigeria’s aviation sector, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has unveiled a Loss of Licence Insurance Scheme for pilots and aeronautical engineers who lose their professional licences due to medical or other qualifying conditions.
The scheme, introduced in Abuja in partnership with First Standard Insurance Brokers, is designed to provide financial compensation and stability for aviation professionals forced into early retirement by unforeseen health challenges.
NAAPE President, Captain Bunmi Gindeh, said the initiative followed extensive consultations with industry stakeholders and aligns with global aviation labour standards.
“Loss of Licence insurance has long been a standard in advanced aviation markets. Our goal is to ensure that no Nigerian pilot or engineer is left without financial support if declared medically unfit to continue flying or maintaining aircraft,” Gindeh stated.
He explained that beyond welfare, the programme aims to strengthen safety culture within the aviation industry by allowing professionals to operate with confidence, knowing their careers are protected against medical uncertainties.
“By introducing this coverage, we are not only securing the livelihoods of our members but also reinforcing safety in the Nigerian aviation ecosystem,” he added.
NAAPE’s Deputy President, Engr. Mudi Muhammad, described the launch as a response to repeated cases of financial distress among affected members.
“Too many of our colleagues have faced hardship after losing their licences unexpectedly. This programme ensures that no one will have to face such situations alone again,” Muhammad said.
Industry observers have hailed the development as long overdue, noting that it brings Nigerian aviation welfare policies closer to international best practices.
The association announced that full details on enrolment, premium categories, and claims procedures will be released soon, alongside a series of nationwide awareness and sensitisation campaigns for members.
NAAPE reaffirmed its commitment to promoting aviation safety, professional excellence, and the long-term career security of Nigerian pilots and engineers.
