LAGOS, July 15, 2025 — The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, acknowledging his significant contributions to the development of Nigeria’s insurance industry during his time in office.
The Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Olusegun Omosehin, made this known in a condolence statement released on Monday.
Buhari passed away in London on Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness. He was 82 years old.
In his message, Omosehin described the former president as a leader who demonstrated unwavering support for the insurance sector.
“It is with profound sadness that we received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.
“On behalf of the National Insurance Commission and the entire insurance industry, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the good people of Nigeria.”
“During his tenure, former President Buhari demonstrated a strong commitment to the growth and development of the insurance industry. His policies and leadership contributed significantly to the sector’s progress and left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s economic landscape.”
Omosehin concluded by praying for the late president’s soul to rest in peace, adding that “his legacy continues to inspire us as we strive to build a more resilient and prosperous Nigeria.”
Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, making history as the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president through democratic elections.
Burial Arrangements and National Mourning
According to Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, the late president’s body will be flown to Nigeria on Tuesday, July 16, with burial scheduled to take place in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, at approximately 2 p.m. in line with Islamic rites.
“We have made arrangements with the family and authorities in London. The body will arrive in Katsina by noon, and burial will be held in Daura the same day,” Governor Radda told journalists at the Katsina Government House.
In honour of the former leader, the Federal Government and the North-West Governors’ Forum have declared Tuesday, July 16, 2025, as a public holiday across the region.
