The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) is teaming up with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Synergy Initiative to raise awareness about insurance and involve Nigerian youths in driving the United Nations’ global development agenda.
The partnership was formalised during a courtesy visit by the SDGs Synergy Initiative team to NAICOM headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking at the meeting, Executive Director of the SDGs Synergy Initiative, Mr. Usman Lawan, revealed that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is supporting the project. He said preparations were underway for a youth summit in collaboration with the National Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN), aimed at mobilising young people for SDG implementation.
Lawan also disclosed plans for NAICOM to help connect Nigerian youths with international partners, including the Brazilian Embassy, in efforts to advance the SDGs. He urged the Commission to play an active role in sensitising young people on the importance of insurance, describing it as a critical pillar in securing sustainable livelihoods.
Responding, NAICOM’s Deputy Commissioner for Insurance (Finance and Administration), Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, highlighted the Commission’s existing collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth to train and empower one million young Nigerians. He commended the SDGs Synergy Initiative for its vision and pledged NAICOM’s support to strengthen insurance penetration across the country.
The partnership is expected to engage critical stakeholders, drive youth inclusion, and position insurance as a key tool for achieving the SDGs in Nigeria.
