The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has held a one-day financial literacy workshop for secondary school students in Jos North and South Local Government Areas of Plateau State, as part of its efforts to promote early financial education among young Nigerians.
Themed “Think Before You Follow, Wise Money Tomorrow,” the event took place at the Joshua Dariye Auditorium, Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos Campus, and drew participation from over 150 students representing more than 20 junior and senior secondary schools.
Declaring the workshop open, the Plateau State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kachollom Gang, underscored the importance of equipping students with financial knowledge at an early stage in life.
“In today’s complex world, understanding how to manage personal finances is not just beneficial—it’s essential,” Dr. Gang said.
“This workshop offers an invaluable opportunity to instill habits of savings, smart spending, and financial planning among the youth.”
She emphasized that financial literacy is not about how much money one has, but rather about developing the discipline to save and make informed financial decisions. Dr. Gang encouraged the students to see money management as a lifelong skill that could determine their financial well-being and future success.
“Sometimes, those who appear wealthy may not be as financially stable as those who save wisely. With these skills, you will be better prepared to manage resources and become responsible leaders of tomorrow,” she added.
The commissioner also noted that the initiative aligns with the goals of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s National Financial Literacy and Inclusion Strategy, which seeks to promote broader financial inclusion and sustainable economic growth.
Earlier in the program, Mrs. Sa’adatu Browsan, Principal Manager in the Communication and Public Affairs Department of the NDIC, provided an overview of the Corporation’s mandate, explaining its critical role in protecting depositors and promoting public confidence in the banking system.
The event also featured a presentation by Mrs. Fyafa Ashashim, titled “Financial Literacy Day,” alongside other interactive sessions aimed at simplifying key financial concepts for young participants.
The NDIC’s workshop reflects its ongoing commitment to building a financially literate society by targeting the next generation of savers, investors, and economic decision-makers.
