The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NEM Insurance Plc, Andrew Ikekhua, has encouraged Nigerian women entrepreneurs to move beyond small-scale survival businesses and adopt professional structures that can grow into global enterprises.
Ikekhua made the call in Lagos during the presentation ceremony of the 2026 ‘She Means Business’ contest, where he emphasised that long-term success in today’s challenging economic environment depends on strong institutional frameworks and professional discipline.
He urged female entrepreneurs to remain determined despite the challenges of running a business.
“Keep pushing boundaries, breaking barriers and striving for excellence. Running a business successfully is not easy, especially in today’s environment, but you are capable of greatness. Your strength inspires others and your voice matters,” he said.
Supporting Women-Owned Businesses
The event marked the finale of the third edition of the ‘She Means Business’ initiative, a programme aimed at supporting women-led enterprises with practical financial assistance.
After a competitive selection process, three entrepreneurs received cash grants of ₦250,000 each to help expand their businesses.
The 2026 winners include:
- Dorcas Egbedara Opeoluwa – Perfume production
- Chisom Kanu – Footwear merchant
- Eniola Robert Mary – Fashion design
Importance of Professional Structures
Addressing the beneficiaries, Ikekhua advised them to use the funds strategically and build sustainable business systems that can grow over time.
He noted that many global conglomerates began with modest capital but expanded through strong governance structures, planning and discipline.
According to him, entrepreneurs must also take steps to protect their businesses against operational risks.
“To ensure business continuity and survival, businesses must be protected against both predictable and unforeseen risks that may arise during operations. At NEM Insurance, we provide solutions that help mitigate such risks,” he explained.
Driving Women’s Economic Inclusion
Also speaking at the event, the General Manager of Corporate Services at NEM Insurance Plc, Mojisola Teluwo, said the programme goes beyond symbolic recognition of women.
She explained that the initiative was designed to actively promote financial inclusion and empower women entrepreneurs.
“The ‘She Means Business’ contest is our practical way of promoting inclusion. We recognise the important role women play in the economy and are proud to provide this financial support to help them achieve their business goals,” Teluwo said.
Encouraging Sustainable Business Growth
The ceremony concluded with a call for women entrepreneurs to adopt professional management structures and insurance protection to help their businesses grow beyond grassroots operations.
For the winners, the grants represent more than financial support—they serve as a strong vote of confidence in their ability to build successful enterprises and contribute to Nigeria’s economic development.
