The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that the full enforcement of third-party motor insurance will begin on February 1, 2025. This decision was made during a meeting with the Commissioner for Insurance and CEO of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Olusegun Omosehin, at the Force Headquarters on Friday, January 10, 2025.
The Commissioner for Insurance, Omosehin, extended his congratulations to the IGP for his achievements, notably the recent licensing of the Police Insurance Company. Omosehin also reiterated his previous request for support in enforcing compulsory insurance policies, with a focus on third-party motor insurance. He committed to providing the necessary assistance to ensure the smooth implementation of the enforcement across the nation.
Emphasizing the importance of mass awareness and education, Omosehin called for a nationwide campaign to inform both citizens and police officers about the significance of third-party motor insurance. He stressed that such initiatives are critical for ensuring compliance and protecting the public from the risks associated with uninsured vehicles.
In response, IGP Egbetokun expressed his support for the initiative, acknowledging the mandatory nature of third-party motor insurance under Nigerian law. He noted that while the law mandates insurance coverage, only about 30 percent of vehicles in the country are currently insured, which leaves many drivers vulnerable.
“The enforcement of this law is not just a regulatory requirement; it is a matter of public safety,” said Egbetokun. “Insurance protects lives, property, and ensures that people do not face financial ruin in the event of an accident.”
The IGP urged all vehicle owners to obtain at least a third-party insurance policy before driving on Nigerian roads. He reiterated that failure to comply with this law would result in penalties.
The meeting was attended by several senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Technical) Dr. Usman Jankara, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Finance and Administration) Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, Director of Legal, Enforcement & Market Development Dr. Talmis Usman, and Director of Inspectorate Bankole Ajebola, among others.
With the February 1 deadline fast approaching, both the Nigeria Police and NAICOM are set to intensify efforts to ensure that the policy is implemented effectively, ensuring a safer and more secure driving environment for all Nigerians.
