In a move aimed at enhancing environmental protection and bolstering Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) have announced a strategic partnership.
The collaboration was formalized during a high-level meeting held at NAIC’s headquarters between NOSDRA Director General, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, and NAIC Managing Director, Hon. Yazid Umar Danfulani.
The two agencies revealed that the partnership will focus on mitigating the adverse effects of oil spills on farming communities while enhancing national food security. The initiative is expected to leverage NOSDRA’s technical expertise in oil spill management and NAIC’s agricultural insurance platforms to support farmers affected by environmental disasters.
Engr. Woke underscored the critical need for the initiative, describing oil spill incidents as a major threat to farmers’ livelihoods and to the country’s food production systems. He emphasized the importance of a coordinated approach to ensure timely and effective responses in vulnerable agricultural regions.
Hon. Danfulani welcomed the collaboration, expressing confidence that the alliance would improve the resilience of rural farmers and help stabilise the broader agricultural economy. “Protecting farmers from environmental risks is key to securing our food systems and sustaining rural livelihoods,” he said.
Also present at the meeting were top executives from both organisations, including NAIC’s Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Ayandayo Babaranti.
Planned initiatives under the partnership include joint community engagement, sustainable agricultural practices, and a rapid response framework for oil spill-affected areas.
Both NOSDRA and NAIC reaffirmed their commitment to working together to promote environmental resilience, drive economic recovery in rural communities, and safeguard Nigeria’s long-term food security.
