The Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, has called on employers across the country to enroll their workers in the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) and consistently fulfill their obligations to ensure more families can benefit from its social safety provisions.
Faleye made this appeal on Wednesday during the official presentation of a cheque worth N18,652,908.20 to the family of a deceased employee who died while carrying out official duties.
Represented by the Executive Director of Operations at NSITF, Hon. Mojisola Alli-Macaulay, the NSITF boss emphasized that such moments reflect the critical role employers play in protecting their workers and their dependents, as well as the broader success of the ECS.
In a statement issued by Alex Mede, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Affairs at NSITF, Faleye urged employers to adopt and enforce stronger workplace safety practices, even though ECS operates as a no-fault scheme. He noted that minimizing the risk of workplace injuries and illnesses is a shared responsibility.
He also advised employers to:
Promptly report work-related injuries or illnesses within stipulated timelines to avoid penalties.
Educate employees and other stakeholders about the ECS and its benefits.
Reassign injured or disabled employees to suitable roles within the organization to promote inclusion and dignity.
Faleye commended the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, the employer of the deceased, for its proactive relationship with the NSITF and its commitment to upholding the principles of the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010.
He also praised NSITF staff and partners for ensuring the Fund’s services remain transparent, efficient, and accessible across both public and private sectors.
“Today’s event is more than a routine exercise. it is a reaffirmation of our core values: social protection, compassion, and service,” Faleye said.
“This cheque represents more than financial assistance; it’s a token of solidarity and a symbol of our shared responsibility to support one another in times of need.”
According to NSITF, the deceased employee was involved in a road accident while returning from work.
