Alhaji Mustapha Adio, popularly known as Tafa Sego, Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has called on transporters, particularly commercial bus drivers, to adhere to the government’s directive on third-party insurance.
Speaking to members of the union, Alhaji Adio emphasized the numerous benefits of third-party insurance, describing it as a crucial safeguard for drivers, vehicle owners, and the general public. He highlighted that the policy efficiently covers the costs associated with accidents or damages to vehicles, making it an essential tool for the motoring community.
“Third-party insurance policy is efficient and takes care of the cost of accidents or damages to vehicles. It is useful to drivers and the motoring public,” he stated.
Adio encouraged transporters to proactively engage with insurance companies of their choice to negotiate and secure suitable policies. He assured members that the union would not support any actions that contravene government laws or directives, reaffirming the NURTW’s commitment to upholding the law.
“I want to use this medium to advise our members to ensure they obtain a third-party insurance policy. It is beneficial to the motoring public—the drivers and owners,” he said. “We have many insurance companies scattered across the state. So, members can approach anyone to obtain the policy. As a union, we won’t be involved in the circumvention of laws or orders of the government, as we are law-abiding citizens.”
The chairman’s remarks come as part of efforts to promote safety and compliance within the transport sector, ensuring that both drivers and passengers are adequately protected in the event of unforeseen incidents. His call to action underscores the importance of third-party insurance as a vital component of responsible vehicle ownership and operation in Lagos State.
