In a strategic move to improve the wellbeing of Nigerian pensioners, the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has announced plans to enroll its retirees in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by 2026. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
This announcement was made in Lagos during the 2024/2025 Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Association of Insurance and Pension Editors (NAIPE). Representing PTAD’s Executive Secretary/CEO, Tolulope Odunaiya, at the event was Olugbenga Ajayi, Head of Corporate Communication.
Ajayi explained that the planned health insurance enrollment reflects PTAD’s deep commitment to safeguarding the welfare of pensioners. “We recognize that retirees, more than anyone else, need consistent and quality healthcare,” he said. “Retirement is the time people need government support the most.”
According to him, PTAD’s target is to ensure that by 2026, at least 90 percent of its pensioners are covered under the NHIS. “We are actively negotiating with NHIA to make this a reality,” he added.
Highlighting the agency’s broader efforts, Ajayi noted that PTAD has introduced several reforms to improve service delivery. Among them is the Mobile Verification initiative, which caters to pensioners who are sick or physically unable to participate in standard verification processes.
“We’ve designed the ‘I Am Alive’ Confirmation system to allow those who have already verified but later fall ill to receive at-home verification,” he said. “Our teams across offices in Lagos, Kaduna, and other states are actively in the field to attend to these pensioners promptly.”
Ajayi also assured that PTAD is working to resolve all outstanding pension-related issues. “We are doing everything possible to ensure pensioners get what they are owed—from arrears to increments. By 2026, these will be included in our annual budget to prevent future delays,” he stated.
Currently operating in 13 states, PTAD says it is committed to expanding its presence and ensuring all pensioners nationwide receive the support and care they deserve.
