Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has launched a large-scale agricultural support initiative, distributing free fertiliser to over 100,000 smallholder farmers and unveiling a Crop Risk Insurance Scheme to protect them from climate-related losses.
The initiatives were flagged off on Saturday at Murtala Square, Kaduna, as part of the state’s broader “farmer-first policy” aimed at enhancing food security, rural development, and economic stability.
The governor announced that 400 trucks of fertiliser are being distributed across the state, with each beneficiary receiving two bags at no cost. He noted that Kaduna remains the only state in Nigeria consistently providing fertiliser and essential inputs free of charge to smallholder farmers.
“This fertiliser distribution is part of a strategic, coordinated, and systems-based approach to agricultural transformation,” Governor Sani said. “We are proud to maintain this farmer-first policy, especially for our most vulnerable and underserved communities.”
In addition to free inputs, the governor launched a Crop Risk Insurance Scheme designed to shield farmers from losses due to pests, diseases, and extreme weather events driven by climate change.
“This scheme underscores our commitment to inclusive development and resilient agriculture,” he stated. “It is a critical part of our plan to ensure long-term food security and rural prosperity.”
Support for Commercial Farmers
Governor Sani also introduced a subsidised fertiliser programme targeting commercial farmers. Under this initiative, eligible participants can access 10 bags of fertiliser at a subsidised rate of ₦30,000 per bag—reflecting a 40% discount.
“This will reduce production costs, promote job creation, and help stabilise food prices in the open market,” he added.
Agricultural Transformation and Budget Expansion
The governor attributed recent agricultural progress in the state to improved security, which has made previously inaccessible farmlands available for cultivation.
Since taking office, he said, the administration has made significant strides, including:
- Distribution of over 500 trucks of fertiliser in 2023
- Implementation of dry season farming support
- Execution of the ginger recovery programme
- Deployment of 200 tractors to promote mechanised farming
In a bold demonstration of the administration’s commitment, Kaduna’s agriculture budget has surged from ₦1.48 billion in 2023 to ₦74.02 billion in 2025—a 4,871% increase. Agriculture’s share of the overall state budget has also risen sharply, from 0.4% in 2023 to 10% in 2025.
“These investments reflect our pledge to transform agriculture from a subsistence activity into a powerful engine for economic growth, job creation, and dignity,” Governor Sani said.
He urged farmers to use the inputs responsibly and praised all stakeholders for their transparency and cooperation in the distribution process.
“Together, we are building a Kaduna State where agriculture is not just a way of life, but a pathway to prosperity,” he concluded.
