In a bid to strengthen road safety and improve emergency response for accident victims, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) have agreed to deepen collaboration under the Motor Third-Party Insurance Scheme.
The partnership was announced following a courtesy visit by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Muhammed, to the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at NAICOM’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the Corps Marshal commended NAICOM for its role in advancing reforms within the insurance industry, particularly after the signing of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.
He called for enhanced data sharing and digital integration between NAICOM and FRSC to improve accident response time, ensure faster compensation for victims, and eliminate fake motor insurance policies.
“There is a need to strengthen data exchange systems between our institutions for quicker accident response and better enforcement of genuine insurance coverage,” Muhammed said.
In response, Omosehin praised the FRSC for its ongoing reforms, particularly in upgrading the national driver licensing system. He noted that the NIIRA 2025 has reinforced the compulsory third-party motor insurance policy and established a special compensation fund for road accident victims, to be managed by a committee that will include FRSC representatives.
Also speaking at the meeting, Mr. Ajodi Nuhu Nasir, representing the NHIA, lauded the inter-agency partnership, describing it as a milestone in improving both road safety and emergency medical care for accident victims.
“This synergy will create a stronger system that not only enhances road safety but also guarantees prompt and quality medical attention for accident victims, reducing fatalities and long-term complications,” he said.
The agencies agreed on several key action points, including:
- Data Integration: A unified data-sharing platform between NAICOM and FRSC for seamless information exchange.
- Joint Awareness Campaigns: A coordinated public education drive on the benefits of insurance and road safety compliance.
- Enforcement Committee: Formation of a joint task force to curb fake insurance policies and enforce proper vehicle coverage.
- Insurance Verification: Inclusion of valid third-party insurance checks in FRSC’s enforcement and public sensitisation programmes.
The collaboration is expected to enhance Nigeria’s road safety framework, ensure timely treatment for accident victims, and protect motorists’ interests. A date for the inauguration of the joint committee will be announced soon.
