The Nigeria Insurers Association (NIA) has honoured its past leaders with Service Recognition Awards, acknowledging their contributions to advancing professionalism, integrity, and innovation within Nigeria’s insurance industry over the past 55 years.
Speaking at the event, NIA Chairman Kunle Ahmed described the association as the unified voice of the insurance sector since its establishment in 1971. He noted that the organisation has played a critical role in strengthening industry standards, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and building public confidence in insurance as a key driver of national development.
According to Ahmed, the progress recorded over more than five decades demonstrates the impact of collective effort, resilience, and long-term vision within the industry.
“Over these five and a half decades, we have made significant strides in strengthening the insurance sector and promoting its relevance to national growth. As we look ahead, we must draw lessons from our past to guide future progress,” he said.
Despite these achievements, Ahmed acknowledged that the industry still faces considerable challenges. He emphasized the need for sustained efforts to expand insurance penetration and improve public perception, noting that significant milestones remain ahead.
He also encouraged former leaders of the association to document their professional experiences, highlighting the value such contributions could bring to both the insurance sector and broader society.
“These publications will not only serve as important reference materials for current leaders but will also extend beyond the industry, given the diverse achievements of many of our past leaders,” he added.
In a keynote lecture titled “Service as the Cornerstone of Leadership and Institutional Legacy,” Idris Shuaibu, Managing Director of Time-line Consult Ltd, underscored the importance of service-driven leadership.
He noted that while leadership is often associated with authority and influence, the long-term success of institutions is more closely tied to a commitment to service, accountability, and sustainable impact.
The event reflects the NIA’s ongoing effort to preserve institutional memory, celebrate legacy, and inspire a new generation of leaders within Nigeria’s evolving insurance landscape.
