A 20-year-old carpenter, Boluwatife Adewumi, has been sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment by an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for stealing an air conditioner valued at N350,000.
Adewumi was convicted on Wednesday on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, theft, unlawful entry, and malicious damage.
The trial magistrate, Kausarat Ayofe, found the defendant guilty as charged and sentenced him to eight months’ imprisonment without an option of fine. The court ordered that the sentence should run concurrently across all four counts.
Ayofe further ruled that the jail term would take effect from September 9, 2025—the date of Adewumi’s arraignment—acknowledging the period he had already spent in custody.
The convict had pleaded not guilty to the charges when he was first arraigned on September 9, 2025. Although he was granted bail, he failed to meet the bail conditions and remained in custody throughout the trial.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Olalekan Adegbite, told the court that the offence was committed on September 5, 2025, at about 3:25 a.m. at the premises of Mutual Benefit Insurance Company, located in Onireke, Ibadan.
According to the prosecution, Adewumi, alongside accomplices who are still at large, unlawfully entered the company’s premises and stole the air conditioner after damaging it.
Adegbite said the offences contravened Sections 516, 390(9), 412, and 451 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about property-related crimes and reinforces the judiciary’s stance on holding offenders accountable under the law.
