The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has called on policyholders affected by the recent flooding in Lagos State to immediately notify their insurance companies, brokers, or agents to begin the claims process.
The appeal follows widespread flooding triggered by days of persistent heavy rainfall, which left many residents and businesses counting losses ranging from damaged homes and vehicles to disrupted commercial activities.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the association, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, the NIA expressed sympathy for individuals, families, and businesses impacted by the disaster, acknowledging the emotional, social, and financial challenges faced by victims.
The association said those with valid insurance policies should report their losses without delay, stressing that early notification and the submission of the required supporting documents would enable insurers to assess claims promptly and expedite the settlement of valid claims.
According to the NIA, the recent flooding serves as another reminder of the critical role insurance plays in protecting individuals and businesses against unforeseen financial losses arising from natural disasters.
While urging policyholders to take advantage of their insurance coverage, the association also highlighted the importance of preventive measures to reduce the impact of flooding. It called for improved environmental sanitation, responsible waste disposal, and regular clearing of drainage channels to minimise flood risks, noting that such disasters may still occur despite preventive efforts.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policyholders through the claims process and encouraged affected insured persons to engage with their insurers, brokers, or agents as soon as possible to facilitate timely compensation where claims are found to be valid.
