Coronation Insurance has emerged as the leading insurance stock in this week’s market selection, as investors continue to search for fundamentally strong companies amid subdued performance on the Nigerian equities market.
The insurer was ranked ahead of a group of companies selected on the basis of financial fundamentals and valuation metrics, including Wema Bank, UACN, May & Baker, Sterling Financial Holdings and Vitafoam.
The latest stock selection comes against the backdrop of a relatively muted performance by Nigerian equities despite largely positive half-year corporate results. The broader market gained just 0.1 per cent last week, with buying interest concentrated largely on banking stocks.
Only the banking index recorded gains among the five sector indices tracked by the Nigerian Exchange, as profit-taking weighed on other segments of the market. Investors are also awaiting the release of results from four of Nigeria’s major banks, which could provide further direction for the market.
Coronation Insurance stands out
Coronation Insurance topped the weekly selection on the strength of its reported fundamentals, with a net profit ratio (NPR) of 19.8 per cent and a price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of 7.9 times.
Its 14-day relative strength index (RSI) stood at 44.1, suggesting the stock was neither in an extremely overbought nor oversold position based on the technical indicator.
The combination of profitability and valuation metrics places Coronation Insurance among the stocks being monitored for potential price appreciation as investors assess opportunities beyond the banking sector.
The insurer’s inclusion is also notable at a time when investors are paying greater attention to the earnings capacity and valuation of listed financial services companies following the release of half-year results.
Wema Bank trades below intrinsic value
Wema Bank was selected for its strong fundamentals and an assessment that the lender is trading below its intrinsic value.
The bank recorded an NPR of 30.5 per cent, while its PE ratio stood at just 1.1 times. Its 14-day RSI was 45.8.
The valuation metrics suggest that the stock remains a notable consideration for investors looking for relatively low-priced opportunities within the banking segment.
Other stocks on the radar
UACN also made the weekly selection on the basis of its fundamentals. The company recorded an NPR of 5.5 per cent, a PE ratio of 22.8 times and a 14-day RSI of 28.8.
May & Baker, meanwhile, posted an NPR of 11.7 per cent, with a PE ratio of 11.7 times and an RSI of 26.1.
Sterling Financial Holdings was selected for its fundamentals and because it is considered to be trading below intrinsic value. Its NPR stood at 16.4 per cent, with a PE ratio of 5.6 times and a 14-day RSI of 48.6.
Vitafoam completed the list, recording an NPR of 14.9 per cent, a PE ratio of 18.7 times and an RSI of 52.7.
The selections reflect a continued search for companies with strong earnings fundamentals or attractive valuations as investors navigate a market that has yet to respond strongly to positive corporate earnings.
