Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie is back at Bendel Insurance, returning to the club with greater experience and renewed ambition ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season.
Obasogie has agreed to a one-year contract with the Benin-based side, bringing him back to the club where he first established himself as one of the NPFL’s most reliable goalkeepers.
The 2026/27 campaign will mark a new chapter for the goalkeeper after two seasons abroad. Following his spell with Bendel Insurance, Obasogie moved to Ethiopia, where he played for Fasil Kenema during the 2024/25 season, before continuing his career in Tanzania with Singida Black Stars.
Now back in Benin, the goalkeeper says he is ready to contribute to the club that played an important role in his development.
“Back to where part of my journey began,” Obasogie said in a message announcing his return.
He added that his time away had given him the opportunity to grow and gain experience, and pledged to give his best to the club, its supporters and the team.
A Proven Record in Benin
Obasogie’s return will provide Bendel Insurance with a goalkeeper who already knows the demands of the club and has a strong record in Nigerian domestic football.
He was instrumental during Insurance’s 21-match unbeaten run in the league in 2023, producing eight clean sheets during the regular season.
His contribution was even more significant in the club’s 2023 President Federation Cup triumph. Insurance defeated Enugu Rangers 1-0 in the final to claim their first major trophy in 43 years, with Obasogie’s penalty-saving ability proving valuable during the competition.
The goalkeeper enjoyed another outstanding campaign in 2023/24, recording 18 clean sheets in the NPFL — a league record at the time — before leaving Nigeria for Ethiopia.
That pedigree makes his return a potentially significant addition for Bendel Insurance as the club prepares for another demanding NPFL season.
A Route Back to the Super Eagles
Obasogie’s return to the NPFL could also have implications beyond club football.
The goalkeeper has earned several Super Eagles call-ups since November 2023, although he is still waiting to make his senior international debut. He was also part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third.
Regular football and strong performances for Bendel Insurance could give Obasogie another platform to press his case for a place in Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeping conversation.
For Bendel Insurance, meanwhile, the signing represents the return of a familiar figure with proven NPFL credentials. For Obasogie, it is an opportunity to rebuild momentum at a club where his career first gained significant traction.
With the new season approaching, both player and club will be hoping that the reunion can produce another successful chapter.
