Ember months are traditionally a period of increased movement in Nigeria. From family reunions, weddings, business activities, and celebrations, more people travel by road between September and December. However, this also exposes travelers to risks.
In a recent webinar titled Ember Months, Safer Roads: How to Drive Smart & Protect Yourself, Coronation Insurance highlighted the essence of responsible driving, motor insurance, and risk management in protecting lives and livelihoods this season.
Nihinlola Adeyemi, CEO of SecureOps Solutions LLC, gave a keynote presentation where she emphasized that road safety is beyond operating a car. It requires constant awareness, emotional discipline, and consideration for other road users.
She explained that even the most experienced drivers are vulnerable to accidents caused by other motorists, poor road conditions, unexpected obstacles, and lapses in concentration.
Nihinlola concluded by encouraging road users to make safety a daily habit through simple practices such as wearing seat belts, using child car seats, and thoroughly inspecting cars before travelling, to significantly reduce exposure to preventable accidents.
The panel session followed and was moderated by Linda Ochugbua, Digital Sales Manager, BusinessDay. It was an insightful discussion with contributions from Adebayo Adedeji, Team Lead, Bancassurance, Coronation Insurance, and Michael Balogun, Retail Underwriting, Coronation Insurance Plc.
They spoke extensively about the covert financial obligations associated with road accidents, which include but are not limited to vehicle replacement, medical expenses, compensation for third-party injuries or property damage, and more.
Questions from attendees were also answered by the panelists. One of the questions was about the common belief that insurance companies do not pay claims.
Michael Balogun referenced the National Insurance Commission’s Q1 2025 market bulletin, which reported an 81.2% claims settlement ratio for motor insurance.
He explained that the reasons for delayed or rejected claims are often incomplete documentation, expired policies, inaccurate incident reports, and claims associated with perils not covered by the policy.
The webinar ended with attendees being urged to purchase the necessary insurance policies from Coronation Insurance ahead of the festive season, and to practice safe driving and greater awareness on the road.
