NEM Insurance Plc has renovated four classroom blocks at Ilupeju Primary School in Lagos and donated notebooks to pupils in a move aimed at improving the learning environment and supporting public education.
The renovation addressed several defects in the school buildings, including damaged roofing sheets, leaking roofs, structural cracks and deteriorating ceilings.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, NEM Insurance Group Chairman, Tope Smart, said the company intervened after identifying the poor condition of the school’s facilities.
He explained that the project was designed to provide a safer and more comfortable environment for pupils and teachers while helping to restore parents’ confidence in the school.
Smart noted that the state of the buildings had prompted some parents to transfer their children to other schools. He expressed hope that the renovation would encourage more families in the community to enrol their children at the school.
The company also donated notebooks to pupils as part of its support for teaching and learning.
The Head Teacher of Ilupeju Primary School, Victoria Ajibade, said the intervention had provided pupils and staff with a more welcoming environment for academic activities.
She thanked NEM Insurance for the support and appealed to other corporate organisations to assist public schools facing infrastructure challenges.
Also speaking, the Education Secretary of the Mushin Local Government Education Authority, Ademola Olokodana, commended the insurance company for investing in the school and contributing to community development.
Olokodana urged other corporate organisations to support educational institutions in the communities where they operate and generate revenue.
He also called for sustained collaboration between the education authority and NEM Insurance, encouraging the company to extend its support to other education-related needs, including pension management for workers in the sector.
