LOMÉ, Togo — The Chairman of the Nigerian National Bureau and Managing Director of Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc, Dr. Lucas Durojaiye, has called for deeper cooperation among member bureaux of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme during a three-day working visit to the scheme’s Permanent Secretariat in Lomé, Togo.
The visit provided an avenue for discussions on strengthening the regional insurance framework and improving its contribution to economic and regional integration across West Africa.
Durojaiye held a courtesy meeting with officials of the Permanent Secretariat, where both sides reviewed issues affecting the effective operation and future development of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme.
Discussions focused on institutional cooperation, operational efficiency, claims management and improving relationships between national bureaux and the Permanent Secretariat.
The parties also examined the role of digital transformation in modernising the scheme and making its operations more efficient and responsive to the needs of motorists and other stakeholders across member countries.
The Permanent Secretariat welcomed the Nigerian delegation and praised the Nigerian National Bureau for its cooperation and continued support for the objectives of the regional insurance initiative.
Officials stressed that stronger communication and regular consultations among member bureaux would be critical to sustaining the scheme, particularly as it undergoes institutional and digital reforms.
The ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme provides a regional framework designed to facilitate third-party motor insurance coverage for motorists travelling across participating West African countries.
The Lomé discussions also underscored the importance of claims management and operational coordination in improving confidence in the scheme and ensuring that its objectives are effectively implemented across member states.
The Permanent Secretariat expressed appreciation to Durojaiye and the Nigerian National Bureau for the visit and reaffirmed its commitment to working with all member bureaux to develop a stronger, more efficient and transparent regional insurance system.
It further pledged to support the continued digital transformation of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme as part of efforts to make the initiative more effective and better aligned with the broader goals of regional integration.
