Stanbic IBTC Insurance has said its successful completion of the National Insurance Commission’s recapitalisation verification process has strengthened its financial position and provided a stronger platform for long-term growth.
The company, among the early insurers to complete the regulatory process, said the successful capital raise represented an important milestone in its development and reinforced its position in Nigeria’s life insurance market.
Commenting on the development, the Chief Executive of Stanbic IBTC Holdings, Chuma Nwokocha, said achieving the new regulatory capital requirement involved more than simply raising funds.
He said the process required disciplined financial planning, strong governance and effective capital management, all of which were important elements of the regulatory assessment.
According to Nwokocha, Stanbic IBTC Insurance’s successful verification against the N10bn capital threshold demonstrated the level of preparation undertaken by the company.
He said the outcome also reflected the financial strength of the wider Stanbic IBTC Group and its approach to capital planning and governance.
Nwokocha noted that the recapitalisation exercise was taking place at a time when Nigeria’s insurance industry was undergoing significant structural changes, with stronger capital requirements expected to influence the composition and capacity of the sector.
He said the company’s ability to meet the regulatory benchmark positioned it to operate within the emerging environment, as the industry moves towards fewer but better-capitalised operators.
The Chief Executive of Stanbic IBTC Insurance, Akinjide Orimolade, described the successful verification as an important achievement but stressed that the company’s focus had now shifted to making effective use of its strengthened position.
Orimolade said the development should be viewed against the future direction of the insurance industry rather than simply as a conclusion to the recapitalisation exercise.
He noted that NAICOM’s new requirements had established a higher baseline for responsible participation in the sector and required substantial discipline across insurance businesses.
According to him, financial capacity, governance and operational scale are becoming increasingly important as insurers position themselves for sustainable growth.
He said Stanbic IBTC Insurance would continue investing in building an institution capable of meeting the expectations of customers and other stakeholders as the industry evolves.
The executive added that successfully meeting the regulatory requirement was only one stage of the company’s broader growth journey.
The recapitalisation exercise was introduced by NAICOM as part of efforts to strengthen the financial capacity and resilience of insurance companies operating in Nigeria.
For Stanbic IBTC Insurance, completing the verification process provides the company with a strengthened capital base as it continues to pursue opportunities in the life insurance market.
The company said its focus would remain on maintaining strong governance and financial discipline while using its enhanced capacity to support its long-term objectives.
The development also underscores the increasing emphasis on capital adequacy and institutional strength within Nigeria’s insurance industry, as regulators and operators seek to create a more resilient market capable of meeting policyholders’ needs.
With its successful verification completed, Stanbic IBTC Insurance said it was now focused on translating the stronger financial position into sustainable value for customers and other stakeholders.
