Cornerstone, NEM Insurance feature among stocks attracting investor attention
Two Nigerian insurance companies — Cornerstone Insurance Plc and NEM Insurance Plc — have emerged among a selection of stocks identified for potential investor interest this week, as market participants increasingly focus on companies with strong fundamentals and attractive valuations.
The selections come at a time when investors are becoming more selective following the strong performance of the Nigerian equities market this year and heightened trading activity across several sectors.
Cornerstone was selected alongside Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, Africa Prudential Plc and MeCure Industries Plc, based on a combination of fundamental strength, valuation metrics and technical indicators.
The stock selection is presented as an investment guide rather than a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any of the securities.
Cornerstone attracts attention near 52-week low
Cornerstone Insurance featured prominently in the weekly stock selection because of its fundamentals and its position close to its 52-week low.
The insurer recorded a net profit ratio of 33.3 per cent, while its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio stood at 8.4 times.
Its 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) was put at 39.6, indicating that the stock was trading below the midpoint of the commonly used 0–100 momentum indicator.
The combination of its valuation and proximity to its 52-week low could make the counter one to watch as investors assess opportunities in the insurance segment following the industry’s recently completed recapitalisation exercise.
NEM Insurance also makes the list
NEM Insurance was another insurance stock identified for its underlying fundamentals.
The insurer’s net profit ratio stood at 15.7 per cent, while its P/E ratio was 6.5 times.
Its 14-day RSI was 60.4, suggesting stronger recent price momentum compared with Cornerstone.
The appearance of both insurers on the weekly stock watchlist comes as the market enters a potentially important period for the sector, following the conclusion of the regulatory recapitalisation exercise.
With insurers now expected to operate with stronger capital positions, investors are increasingly looking beyond regulatory compliance to earnings prospects, valuations and the ability of individual companies to generate sustainable returns.
Ecobank leads weekly selection
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) topped the broader stock selection, with analysts citing its strong fundamentals and the view that the banking group was trading below its intrinsic value.
ETI’s net profit ratio was reported at 79 per cent, with a P/E ratio of 3 times and a 14-day RSI of 29.4.
Africa Prudential Plc was also selected on the basis of strong fundamentals and its proximity to its 52-week low. The company recorded a 45.2 per cent net profit ratio, a 15.5 times P/E ratio and an RSI of 37.2.
MeCure Industries completed the five-stock selection, with a net profit ratio of 8.5 per cent, a P/E ratio of 31.1 times and an RSI of zero.
Investors urged to remain selective
The stock selections come after Nigerian equities declined by 1.2 per cent last week, despite a sharp increase in trading activity.
Market volume reached approximately 12.2 billion shares, compared with 5.4 billion shares a year earlier.
Analysts at Meristem Securities had cautioned that investors were likely to remain selective following the market’s strong year-to-date performance, with profit-taking in stocks that had recorded substantial gains potentially limiting further upside.
The analysts also pointed to dividend expectations as a possible source of support, particularly for leading banks.
For insurance investors, however, the inclusion of Cornerstone and NEM Insurance highlights the growing attention being paid to valuation and fundamentals as the sector enters the post-recapitalisation era.
The key test for insurers will now be whether stronger capital bases can translate into stronger underwriting performance, increased business volumes, improved profitability and ultimately better shareholder returns.
