The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a free health insurance programme and medical outreach for inmates in Abuja, targeting more than 1,500 beneficiaries.
The initiative began at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje and marks the first time inmates in the FCT are being formally enrolled into the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund. Authorities say the programme will also be extended to correctional centres in Gwagwalada and Suleja.
The scheme is backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who emphasised that incarceration should not prevent individuals from accessing quality healthcare. He directed the rollout as part of efforts to promote inclusive healthcare.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, said the programme aligns with the goal of universal health coverage. She explained that enrolled inmates will receive free access to consultations, laboratory tests, surgeries, emergency care, and essential medications.
The exercise also included National Identification Number (NIN) registration to support proper documentation and smooth enrolment. Inmates were educated on hygiene, disease prevention, and the importance of health insurance.
During the outreach, officials also supported inmate rehabilitation efforts by purchasing items produced by them, including sandals, books, and bags, and donating funds to vocational training programmes.
Fasawe assured that the facility’s clinic would receive continuous support, including regular drug supplies and improved accreditation to enhance service delivery.
As part of the programme, hundreds of inmates received medical attention, including screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and malaria, eye examinations, and access to prescribed medications. Some were also provided with corrective glasses.
Officials described the intervention as the first comprehensive government-led healthcare support for inmates in the facility. Inmates expressed appreciation through songs and celebrations following the outreach.
The FCTA reiterated its commitment to expanding healthcare access to vulnerable groups across the territory.
