Noor Takaful Insurance Limited and Noor Health Ltd. are set to mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s insurance and healthcare sectors with a joint surplus distribution ceremony scheduled for August 11 in Lagos.
The event will highlight two landmark achievements: Noor Takaful’s continuation of its annual underwriting surplus distribution to eligible participants and Noor Health’s debut as the first Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) in Nigeria to return surplus to qualifying enrollees.
According to the companies, this year’s exercise will push Noor Takaful’s cumulative surplus distribution above ₦1.3 billion since it began operations in 2017, reinforcing its position as one of the country’s leading practitioners of the Takaful insurance model.
Under the Takaful system, participants contribute to a common risk pool based on principles of mutual cooperation and shared responsibility. Where claims experience is favourable and regulatory obligations have been met, eligible participants may receive a share of the remaining underwriting surplus in line with the company’s surplus distribution policy.
The insurer said its ability to return surplus consistently over the past nine years reflects the financial sustainability of its operations and the participant-centred nature of Islamic insurance.
The 2026 ceremony will also introduce a new chapter for Nigeria’s healthcare financing industry as Noor Health becomes the first HMO to implement a surplus-sharing model for eligible enrollees.
The company said the initiative applies the principles of mutuality and transparency traditionally associated with Takaful insurance to healthcare financing, allowing members to benefit not only from medical coverage but also from prudent management of healthcare risk funds.
Speaking ahead of the event, Managing Director of Noor Takaful Insurance Limited, Rilwan Sunmonu, described the occasion as an important milestone in the evolution of ethical financial services in Nigeria.
He said the insurer has remained committed to one of the defining features of the Takaful model by distributing underwriting surplus to eligible participants every year since commencing operations.
According to Sunmonu, surpassing ₦1.3 billion in cumulative surplus payments demonstrates that Takaful extends beyond conventional insurance by promoting fairness, shared responsibility and collective prosperity among participants.
He added that Noor Health’s adoption of the surplus distribution model represents a pioneering development for Nigeria’s HMO industry and broadens the application of ethical financing principles within the healthcare sector.
The ceremony is expected to bring together regulators, insurance brokers, healthcare providers, corporate clients, policyholders and other industry stakeholders. Participants will receive their surplus entitlements while engaging with the management teams of both organisations on the long-term value proposition of Takaful insurance and ethical healthcare financing.
Industry observers say the initiative could stimulate greater interest in participant-focused insurance and healthcare models, particularly as consumers increasingly seek transparency and value from financial service providers.
Licensed by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) in 2016 as Nigeria’s first full-fledged composite Takaful operator, Noor Takaful commenced business in 2017 and has since specialised in Shariah-compliant insurance solutions for individuals and corporate organisations.
Noor Health, which is licensed by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), provides healthcare financing services built around principles of fairness, affordability and transparency. Its planned surplus distribution is expected to establish a new benchmark for member engagement within Nigeria’s managed healthcare industry.
The dual milestones underscore a growing emphasis on ethical finance and shared-value models in Nigeria’s insurance and healthcare sectors, with both organisations positioning themselves at the forefront of participant-centred innovation.
