Unilever Nigeria, Stanbic IBTC Holdings and Cornerstone Insurance have emerged among the stocks highlighted for investors this week, alongside Aradel Holdings and Fidson Healthcare, as the Nigerian equities market prepares for a busy third-quarter earnings season.
The selection comes after Nigerian stocks recorded a marginal decline of 0.1 per cent last week, driven by profit-taking across most sectors, with industrial goods being the exception.
The Insurance Index and Oil and Gas Index recorded the steepest losses, falling by 2.8 per cent and 2.6 per cent, respectively. Despite the weekly decline, the benchmark equity index had gained 58.9 per cent since the beginning of the year.
Market attention is expected to centre on the release of third-quarter financial results, as listed companies approach the October 31 reporting deadline.
The stock selections are based on an assessment of company fundamentals and selected market indicators, including price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios and the 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI).
Unilever Nigeria
Unilever Nigeria leads the list on the strength of its reported fundamentals. The consumer goods company has a P/E ratio of 18.8 times and a 14-day RSI reading of 62.8.
The indicators provide a snapshot of the company’s valuation and recent share-price momentum, although they do not independently establish whether the stock is undervalued or likely to appreciate.
Stanbic IBTC Holdings
Stanbic IBTC Holdings features on the list because of its reported fundamentals and an assessment that its shares are trading below intrinsic value.
The financial services group has a P/E ratio of 5.8 times and an RSI reading of 47.7.
Cornerstone Insurance
Cornerstone Insurance is included on the basis of its reported fundamentals. The insurer has a P/E ratio of eight times and a 14-day RSI reading of 40.3.
Aradel Holdings
Aradel Holdings also makes the list on the strength of its reported fundamentals. The energy company has a P/E ratio of eight times, while its RSI stands at 35.2.
Fidson Healthcare
Fidson Healthcare rounds out the selection, with the pharmaceutical company recording a P/E ratio of 18.5 times and an RSI reading of 56.7.
Investors urged to exercise caution
The stock selection is intended as an investment guide rather than a direct recommendation to buy, sell or hold any of the securities.
Investors should consider the companies’ latest financial results, earnings outlook, debt levels, cash flows, dividend policies and prevailing market conditions before making investment decisions. They may also consult a qualified financial adviser.
P/E ratios and RSI readings are useful analytical tools, but neither guarantees future share-price performance. Investors should independently assess each company’s prospects and their own risk tolerance before committing funds.
